Why Reading Level is Important

As a child, I was always told that I was a good reader. I could read quickly and easily, and I enjoyed books. However, I never really understood the importance of reading until I took Mr. Terupt’s class in fifth grade.

Mr. Terupt was a different kind of teacher. He didn’t just teach us how to read; he taught us why reading is important. He showed us how reading could open up new worlds, teach us new things, and make us better people.

One of the things that Mr. Terupt did that really made an impact on me was to have us read books at different reading levels. He would give us a book that was too easy for us to read, and then he would have us read a book that was too difficult. He would ask us to compare the two books and to talk about what we had learned from each one.

This activity helped me to understand that reading level is not just about how fast you can read. It’s also about the depth of understanding that you gain from a book. When I read a book that was too easy for me, I didn’t really have to think about what I was reading. I could just skim the surface of the story and not really absorb the meaning. However, when I read a book that was too difficult for me, I had to slow down and really pay attention to what I was reading. I had to think about the characters, the plot, and the themes. This made me a better reader and a more critical thinker.

I am grateful to Mr. Terupt for teaching me the importance of reading level. He helped me to become a better reader and a more informed person. I believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn about reading level. It is an essential part of becoming a lifelong learner.
